The Inverell Library offers a wide range of services to children of all ages – these programs are aimed at encouraging kids to explore the worlds of books. By doing so it is hoped that they will develop a love of reading which promotes life-long learning. What better way to encourage a child to read than by immersing them in a positive environment filled with books and information – and library staff that are eager to challenge your child in a fun and energetic way.

The children’s programs that we provide are FREE-OF-CHARGE and the activities many & varied - if you can find it in a book, we may host a program on it.

Please feel free to ask the staff at the Library for more information on up-and-coming kids & teen programs or keep your eye out for the notices that are posted around the Library.

    Little Gems Reading Club
Children who are not yet ready to read on their own are invited to become members of the Little Gems Reading Club. Members are given a passbook and are asked to write down the titles of the books that they have read. They will receive a reward when they have read 50 books. Participants can keep watch on how far they’ve come by checking out The Little Gems Rainbow (a large chart displayed in the children’s section at the Library). A child’s progression through the reading program tends to be discussed at Storytime sessions so involvement in Storytime and Little Gems often go hand in hand.

    Fossickers Reading Club
6-12 year olds are invited to become members of the Fossickers Club. Members take part in numerous fun and challenging
themed activities designed to develop their love of reading, for example: some previously held programs are as follows:

Dr Suess Centenary ‘Suesselebration’ (Cat in the Hat fun)
    Tai Chi & Yoga
Charlie & the Chocolate Factory (chocolate making and other Chocolate Factory activities)
    Mother’s Day Crafts
    Olympic Games fun
Space activities (make your own rocket and more)

Members are under no obligation to attend every session – but remember: more meetings means more opportunities to meet
new friends and have lots of fun! Meetings are held the first Wed./Thurs. of the month at 4-5pm. Wednesday for Junior
Fossickers (6-9yrs) & Thurs for Senior Fossickers (10-12yrs). Visit the Library's events calendar (in the News & Events
section) to find out what Fossickers activities are coming up!

    Fossickers Reading Challenge
We dare you to read 100 books! That is the challenge put to 6-12 year old independent readers throughout the Inverell Shire.
Participants in The Challenge are given a passbook and are asked to write down the titles of the books that they have read.
They will receive rewards as they progress through the program. Participants can keep watch on how far they’ve come by
checking out The Fossickers Trail (a large map displayed in the children’s section at the Library). The challenge runs from
February 1 to September 30 each year. Children are welcome to sign up from January 1 to July 31. Involvement in The Reading
Challenge and The Fossickers Club often go hand in hand: a child’s progression through the reading program tends to be
    discussed at each meeting.

    Storytime
The importance of storytime for your child:
Storytime helps to stimulate cognitive development, and is one of the first steps towards a love of libraries, books and reading. Each session involves a craft component to help develop your child’s fine motor skills (those skills which require a child to manipulate and gain control over a range of materials and tools). Fine motor development contributes to the improvement of communication skills in young children: they are often used for communication purposes both functional and expressive, for example, writing a name or message, or manipulating a computer mouse.Storytime is a fun and stimulating experience for your child and is held every Wednesday and Thursday from 11-11.30am. A new theme is presented each week.

    Special Events
Throughout the year the Library hosts a variety of special events. Such events include:

    National Simultaneous Storytime
Each year the Inverell Library joins more than 750 other schools, libraries and childcare centres Australia-wide to participate in reading the exact same picture book at the exact same time. NSS aims to promote the value of reading and literacy and recognise the excellence of books produced by Australian writers. At the same time, it highlights the importance of literacy in children, and demonstrates how reading can be a fun experience. The reading is usually followed by an activity based around the theme of the book. In 2004 Mike Dumbleton’s book Muddled-Up Farm was selected as the official NSS book. To tie in with this theme, farm songs were sung at the Inverell Library and some real-life barnyard friends dropped by for the children to pat.

    Children’s Book Week
An annual event that highlights the outstanding books written by Australian authors. Each year the Children’s Book Council hands out awards to the authors of these outstanding books. Certain books are selected as ‘short-list’ books (semi-finalists) in a variety of categories. From this group Honour books (finalists) and Winners are selected. Inverell Library celebrates by:
    • Decorating the library based on the official theme of the year. Displays are created in
    • the junior section of the library
    • Organising activities for teenagers based on the Book Week theme
    • Hosting visits from various local pre-schools – these involve story reading, tours of the
    • Book Week displays at the Library & activities based on the Book Week theme
    • Visiting preschools – if a preschool can’t visit us – we visit them
    • Hosting activities for 6-12 year olds based on the Book Week theme
    • Displaying the Short-Listed books and highlighting the winners of each category
Children’s Book Week is a generally regarded as a particularly special time on most public library calendars.

    Author visits
In the past, Inverell Library has played host to a number of well-loved authors including:
    • Sophie Masson
    • Jackie French
    • John Larkin
    • Leonie Norrington
    National Youth Week
A nation-wide celebration of the skills, talents and contributions made by youth to their communities. In 2004 Inverell Library presented Inverell Idol to showcase the talent of our local youth. This competition was based on the popular television series Australian Idol and was held at the Inverell RSM Club. Although the event was a competition for youth (aged 13-25) people of all ages were able to be part of the audience and vote for their favourite singer.
