Stuff For Young Adults & Teens

Are you aged between 13-17 years? Looking for some fun things to do?
Well we might have just what you’re looking for. The Inverell Library has an entire section devoted to people your age. Our Young Adults section has all sorts of CDs, DVDs, magazines & books and if you can’t find something to suit you – then simply tell us what you’d like and we’ll try to get it in – simple as that. Library Staff are always interested in hearing what interests you! We also run heaps of fun activities as well. These include school holiday programs (eg. game nights) and regular TGI meetings (Teen Group Ink). Read on to find out more about some of these great activities.

    Teen Group Ink
TGI (short for Teen Group Ink) is the name of our young adults group. It is a fun, informal gathering that was set up to cater to the specific needs of our young adult borrowers aged 13 to 17 years.
      What do they do?
Members meet once a month and get involved in stacks of different activities. Here's some of the things TGI have been up to: Top Secret (spy games, code crackers & mystery solving), Games Nights, Mind Magic (an afternoon of puzzles & riddles), Cartooning, funky crafts, movie nights and Treasure Hunts.
TGI members also have a large influence over what items are purchased by the Library for its Young Adults collection – this means books, music CDs, talking books magazines etc. So if you’ve always wanted to have a say in what goes onto the shelves at the Library – then here’s your chance. The best thing about getting involved in the selection process at TGI is that you will be able to reserve items free of charge – and before anyone else.

      When do they meet?
Meetings are held the 3rd Wednesday of month, 4-5pm. Check out the Library's Events Calendar (in the News & Events section) to find out what's coming up.

How do I become a member?
There’s no membership fee or forms to fill out. Simply turn up at the meetings - it’s as easy as that! There’s no obligation to attend all of the sessions – come to one of the meetings or all of them – it’s entirely up to you. Please be aware that certain meetings have restrictions on the number of teens able to attend (eg. some craft sessions), so if you’re not sure whether a particular session has a number limitation, it’s recommended that you ring in advance to book a spot.

      TGI Dollars Rewards
Members of TGI have plenty of opportunities to earn TGI Dollars to bid on prizes at the TGI End-Of-Year Auction.

    Special Events
Throughout the year the Library hosts a variety of special events. Such events include:
      Children’s Book Week
An annual event that highlights the outstanding books written by Australian authors. Each year the Children’s Book Council hands out awards to the authors of these outstanding books. Certain books are selected as ‘short-list’ books (semi-finalists) in a variety of categories. From this group Honour books (finalists) and Winners are selected. Inverell Library celebrates by:
      • Decorating the library based on the official theme of the year. Displays are created in the junior section of the library
      • Hosting visits from various local pre-schools – these involve story reading, tours of the Book Week displays at the Library & activities based on the Book Week theme
      • Visiting preschools – if a preschool can’t visit us – we visit them
      • Hosting activities for 6-12 year olds based on the Book Week theme
      • Organising activities for teenagers based on the Book Week theme
      • Displaying the Short-Listed books and highlighting the winners of each category
Children’s Book Week is a generally regarded as a particularly special time on most public library calendars.

      Author visits
In the past, Inverell Library has played host to a number of well-loved authors including:
      • Sophie Masson
      • Jackie French
      • John Larkin
      • Leonie Norrington

      National Youth Week
A nation-wide celebration of the skills, talents and contributions made by youth to their communities. In 2004 Inverell Library presented Inverell Idol to showcase the talent of our local youth. This competition was based on the popular television series Australian Idol and was held at the Inverell RSM Club. Although the event was a competition for youth (aged 13-25) people of all ages were able to be part of the audience and vote for their favourite singer. Due to popular demand Inverell Idol 2 will be held in 2005.
