    Heritage Advisor

The main goal of the heritage advisory program is to assist the local community and council to identify,
manage and conserve the heritage of the Inverell area with funding support from NSW Heritage Office.

The heritage advisory program commenced in Broken Hill in 1983, and currently about 90% of the 152
Councils in NSW have Heratige Advisors.

The Heritage Advisor for Inverell is Ian Kirk who has been visiting the area about once a month since July 2002.
Appointments can be made with the Heritage Advisor through Council's Planning and Development Department
    on 02 6728 8255 or by email at council@inverell.nsw.gov.au

    Heritage Listing

A heritage listed building or building located within a Heritage Conservation Area does not necessarily mean
that alterations cannot be made to a property. In assessing any proposed alterations of the property, Council
will take into account the impact of the proposed change on the heritage significance values of the building item
in addition to other planning controls.

    Local Heritage Assistance Fund

In addition to free heritage advice, Council also has a Local Heritage Assistance fund which provides small grants
to assist in heritage conservation works to Heritage Items and contributory buildings in Heritage Conservation Areas.

    Heritage Review

Council is currently carrying out a Community based heritage review. The current Inverell Shire Heritage Study dates from 1986 and is badly in need of updating. The study is very limited in that it does not include any of the villages in the Shire other than Ashford, nor does it include any cemeteries or indigenous places. The images in the study are over 20 years old and its accessibility is restricted in that it is currently only available in printed or hard copy format.

In the past, heritage studies have usually been carried out by a team of consultants working with a local committee. The process usually involved only a limited level of community consultation.

The main difference between this community based heritage study review and the conventional consultant based model, is that the community is not just consulted but are actively involved in researching and identifying places of significance in the Inverell Shire.

The purpose of this project is to collate information into a single electronic database which will be readily accessible to everybody.

We are actively seeking your participation in this exciting project by downloading the Heritage Review Data Collection Sheet below and returning it to Council by:

    Fax - 02) 6728 8277
    Email - heritage@inverell.nsw.gov.au
In person - Council's Administration Centre, 144 Otho Street, Inverell.
By Post - PO Box 138, Inverell NSW 2360
