The Inverell Shire is renowned for its first class sporting facilities and the range of activities available for residents and visitors alike. Inverell, perhaps more than any other country town can only be described as "sport mad".
 
With various indoor and outdoor facilities Inverell caters for almost every sport imaginable. Council provides a well maintained Sporting Complex which is situated along side the picturesque Macintyre River. A variety of sports are provided for on the Complex which is used by numerous people each week. The community strongly supports a range of sporting activities through the assistance of a Sports Council.
 
There are many fine licensed clubs in the district and all welcome visitors. There are excellent bowling and golf clubs in Inverell, Ashford and Delungra. Our Golf and Bowling Clubs welcomes visitors and the Returned Services Memorial Club (RSM) is the entertainment centre for the Shire.
 
Inverell's premier sporting event is the International Grafton to Inverell Cycling Classic. This Classic Race is in its 44th year and is a huge one day event that covers 220kms over the Great Dividing Range taking in some fantastic scenery. The Classic attracts both an international and local field of competitors.
 
Inverell boasts a wide range of sporting clubs supported by the Inverell Sports Council.
 
Sports catered for are cricket, tennis, squash, rugby league and union, golf, soccer, polocrosse, campdrafting, hockey, touch football, netball, athletics, little athletics, water skiing, swimming in an Olympic standard pool, basketball, gymnastics, cycling, softball, bowls, horse and harness racing, motor cycling, car racing, pistol, rifle and trap shooting and indoor cricket. There is a private martial arts club and gymnasium in Inverell.
 
Horse riding and walking tracks are also provided for passive relaxation.
 
The area is ideally suited to gliding and flying.
 
NSW Sport and Recreation provides a range of programs and services to assist members of the community to participate in regular sport, recreation and physical activity.
